Because / Seigensha

Because by Seigensha is the first Japanese edition of Sophie Calle's experimental art book, published at the artist's own request. In 2018, Sophie Calle presented her work series 'Parce que' (Because), where embroidered texts beginning with "because" covered frames, and viewers read the text before lifting the cloth to face the photographs. The book recreates this experience in an interactive format where readers first read the words, then physically remove the photographs themselves to explore the images.

This Japanese edition includes the same content as the new French and English editions, with 6 new works added. Supervised by contemporary art curator Aomi Okabe, the book presents Sophie Calle's artistic world in beautiful Japanese translation. The B5 variant hardcover format with cloth cover allows readers to re-experience Calle's works through this unique book structure.
